I’m not a big jewelry person. I have my wedding rings. I own a string of pearls, but don’t wear them often, and I have a locket. I have a couple of rings–one was a gift, and the other I bought for myself when I graduated from college. None of it is very costly. That’s the extent of my jewelry collection.
I can’t think of a good reason why I’m not much of a jewelry person. I think it’s mostly because I’m such a sentimental sap. I’m the type of person who sees romance behind everything, and wearing a piece of jewelry just because it looks good with an outfit isn’t good enough to my sentiment-addled brain. Every time–and I mean it when I say “every time”–I put on my locket, I think something like this:
“When I’m an old woman, I’ll give this locket to my great-granddaughter, and she’ll treasure it because I wore it every single day of my adult life.”
Or, if I’ve watched Bones or Castle, I’ll think,
“If my body was found mummified in a cellar or something, they’ll know it’s me by this locket, and they’ll know who was dearest to my heart.”
(So if you happen to stumble across a mummy with this particular locket around it’s neck, double check to make sure I’m still alive and kicking, would you? 😉 )
In my current Work In Progress, I’ve added a family heirloom–a diamond pendant. I think it’s gorgeous! And I have to say, I could be convinced to wear diamonds “just because.”
So what about you? Do you have a piece of jewelry with special meaning? I’d love to hear about it!
Luv me some jewelry. After going to schools which prohibited jewelry, and working for years in churches or ministries that prohibited it, I finally got my ears pierced at age 51. What I wear is still not flashy or ostentatious, and most of it is inexpensive. I have oodles of pins/brooches that were, for some reason, OK to wear when necklaces and earrings, rings and bracelets were prohibited. Seriously, what’s up with that??
But I daily wear my grandmother’s gold wedding band (little finger, right hand), and my mother’s engagement diamond next to it. Friends who visited Hawaii gave me a long strand of freshwater pearls that I wear frequently. About 15 years ago, my father gave me a gift of $100 and I bought a 10K gold ring with tiny rubies. I’m not in the boyfriend or husband mill, so I don’t get jewelry as gifts. Everything else, I bought for myself. I favor opals, freshwater pearls, and amethyst.
One ring that means a lot to me is the one I bought for myself when I graduated from college. It was a personal celebration of a milestone, and whenever I wear it, I remember that feeling of success, happiness and limitless hope for the future. I’m glad I bought it for myself.
Just today, I read an article on the mummification of Pope John XXIII. They put him through a succession of toxic pickling baths, which I don’t suppose your pretty locket would survive. Most of those people involved in the process died of poisoning or cancer from those chemicals. The dead unburying the dead. Oi.
Ick! I suppose if someone mummified me on purpose, the investigation would be a little bit tougher… 😉
I love that you wear jewelry with the intention of creating heirlooms. And celebrating your live and loves. What a beautiful approach.
I’ve been slowly moving away from wearing oodles of costume jewelry and big flashy earrings, toward wearing good quality, simpler stuff. Kevin gave me a pearl and gold necklace when we were dating that I still love. I have a couple of Pandora bracelets that my in-laws have given me, and one made of two vintage silver spoons, and then a long silver necklace with my kids’ names stamped on it. That’s basically what I wear these days, although I still have a good selection of cheap and trendy jewelry. I need to get a longer chain for my locket, and then I think I’ll wear it all the time.
On my christmas list this year, I put “diamond studs from Tiffany’s, but I’d be just as happy with some from People’s.” No luck this year, but maybe next time.
I never did get my ears pierced, but I love the idea of diamond studs. So pretty and timeless!
A lovely post 🙂
I have a gold necklace my uncle bought me when I was very, very young. It has a gold teddy bear on the end, it’s very nice 🙂 Only for special occasions though as it’s kinda delicate.
I always love the idea of heirloom jewellery, I think it’s a lovely thing.
It sounds beautiful, Harliqueen! I like the idea of heirlooms, too. I wish I had one from my family, but will have to make do with creating my own. LOL
I had a lovely little sterling silver ring that I bought one summer, it had great summer memories, then 6 years ago, I lost it in the snow…I spent hours digging in my bare hands (so I could feel it!!) and even shoveled a lot of snow into my yard hoping that when it melted I would find this little ring. But never found it…I have since made new memories and have a Black Hills Gold pendent my best friend gave to me, which I rarely take off!! I love jewelry!! and hope someday it will become a heirloom too!
Oh, that’s heartbreaking! Since I have a son (and he’s an only child), I’m crossing my fingers for a granddaughter one day to pass these things along to!
