I hate sun. I burn easily, and even if I slather on enough sun screen to protect my skin, I end up with a pounding headache and an upset stomach when I get overheated. I’m fragile that way. I seriously wouldn’t have survived being anything but a lady of leisure if I was born in a different time. And even then…
Anyway, I live in a smallish town without a lot of shade, and the walk to my son’s school is a hot one. Then I sit outside with a friend while our kids play on the playground together, and then walk home again–a total of an hour and a half in blazing sunlight. So I have a solution–an umbrella!
Yes, I look like an idiot–as you can see in the selfie I took for your benefit. I simply had to embrace that. But it’s functional! I carry portable shade with me, and for as dumb as I look, once I get to the desert that is the playground, everyone gathers under the shade of my umbrella. So I’m doing something right. And when I get home, I’m not overheated. It’s a beautiful solution!
I’ve noticed a couple of other people doing the same thing from time to time, and I wonder if I haven’t started something. “I saw some lady doing this the other day, and it seemed like a good idea…” Either that, or they’re ignoring me as hard as I’m ignoring them, and none of us care what we look like so long as we’ve got shade.
It’s probably the latter. 😉
LOL, you’re hilarious! and bloody clever too! Sun is the WORST cancer causing thing in the world!! No, you don’t want sun, ever! I hate the sun too. Exhausts me, annoys me too, but it’s nice sitting inside staring outside as the sun shines on the plants! LOL x x x
Yes, I just love sun through a window. 🙂 I’m with you on that! LOL!
I saw a lady with an sun umbrella last week when we drove to Phoenix to fly out, and thought how clever she was. Parasols will probably be the next trendy accessory.
I hope they come into fashion! It would sure save me the bother of looking silly. 🙂
Although I don’t carry an umbrella with me, I am someone who is concerned about sun exposure. Hubby is prone to burning, so we’re always about the sunblock. It’s pricy, but I find the investment in Neutrogena’s Ultimate Oil-Free Sport Face sunblock in SPF 70. It saved my skin in the desert air, and a little goes a loooong way. It’s worth the investment. It’s thick and creamy, doesn’t drip or run down your skin during application. Hubby is an aviation enthusiast, and living in the PNW, he loves all of the air shows during the summer. After 15 years together, we’ve turned packing for air shows for hands-free or lightweight belongings to a streamlined process. I love the canopy chairs by “Canopy Comfort,” but I can’t find their website right now. The reason I liked the “Canopy Comfort” brand is that the chairs are self contained, no bags. The canopy itself folds around the chair becoming the storage container, and it has TWO (2) thick (comfy) backpack straps, leaving you hands-free. I found a link to the closest thing I could find similar to our canopy chairs: https://www.dickssportinggoods.com/p/kelsyus-original-canopy-chair-16kesu2016rgnlcnpodr?. Hope that helps!
Oh my goodness, that is a piece of genius! I love it!
Umbrellas used to be common until the early part of the 1900s to protect a fair lady’s complexion from too much sun. Maybe we need to go back to that.
If we could just bring back the parasol.
