Here in Northern Alberta, Canada, we’ve been having a crazy warm winter. It’s been this way for the last few years. We get a cold snap, then the temperature pops up to above freezing and everything melts for a while. It’s kind of unnerving to see green grass sprouting in January and February. It’s like the sound of a baby’s laugh when you’re home alone and you don’t have a baby. But it’s been happening the last few years!

Anyway, I breathe a big sigh of relief when the snow comes back again… like it did today. (At least the day I’m typing this.) So I took a few pictures.

This is from walking my son and his friend to school. The kids were having fun in the snow and complaining that they wouldn’t have indoor recess because it wasn’t cold enough and the snow might very likely choke them to death. LOL! I was the wrong person to complain to. They’d have to take that up with their teachers. ๐Ÿ˜‰

This is me–in all my winter-wear glory. I was trying to include the tree behind me, but it looked much more impressive in person. And then people were walking down the sidewalk, and a 39-year-old woman does not stand around taking more selfies to get the angle right with an audience. She just doesn’t. ๐Ÿ˜‰

So this is my Canadian winter. I hope you’re enjoying yours, too, wherever you hail from!

I don’t believe in being cold. Cold was for when I was a twenty-year old, dashing across a snowy park, trying to get to my next class. Cold was for when I cared about how I looked when dashing across that snowy park, lest someone see me… Oh, twenty-year-olds… I was so resilient and dumb. ๐Ÿ˜‰ Warm is for when you no longer care, or for when you realize that fashion should be reserved for the indoors, and it should make allowances for several layers of clothing.

I love living in the cold, Canadian North. It’s very good for writing because no one actually wants to go outside when it’s blustery and minus some unholy number. Sitting at your computer while the ice inches up your window panes just feels cozy. I also love having a huge, warm coat, because while I am out in that cold, I don’t feel a thing.

While I start thinking springtime thoughts starting about January 1, the reality of the situation is that winter has barely started. We have about 3 months left… Our winter has been ridiculously warm so far, but we’ve had a few cold stretches that make that parka my favorite fashion accessory. That’s three months of long johns and hot tea, parkas and cranking up the heat to compensate for whatever travesty is happening in the weather outside.

The next time you see THAT coming down the sidewalk toward you, wave! It’s probably me. ๐Ÿ™‚

So selfishly warm…

I suspect I might be a slightly selfish person for this, but I absolutely love a cold day! First of all, I work from home, so I get to stay inside where it’s cozy and nurse a pot of tea all day. The agony, right?

Secondly, I get to wear this coat every time I step out into the cold:

4565m_red_10I honestly don’t feel a thing out there while I walk my son to school and back. I also don’t see anything in my periphery vision because of the wolf fur surrounding my face. (My little guy is equally bundled up.) I turn a full circle before crossing a street to make sure I don’t get smucked from behind or something. I’d never hear it coming!

Thirdly, this is what -22C/-7F looks like when you aren’t shivering and stamping your feet… And it’s gorgeous.

DSC03360There is just something about the tickle of frost on dry leaves, my breath hanging in the air, and odd looks I get from neighbors while I drop the camera four times before I take pictures. ๐Ÿ˜‰ The perfect beginning to a day where there is nothing better to do than to work on a novel.
