I just wanted to take the chance to wish all of you a very Merry Christmas!

And look what arrived on Friday! šŸ™‚ My book paired with Rebecca Winters’ in one volume published through Mills and Boon Western Romance in the Philippines, Australia and New Zealand. It’s really exciting for me to think of my book being bought in other countries–on other continents!–around the world. That never gets old!

Christmas is coming up fast, and I’m looking forward to time with family, and enjoying all the cozy pleasures of this holiday season.

I thought I’d share a couple of more photos.

This is our parrot on our son’s shoulder while he watches TV… I don’t share pictures of my son, so this is as close as it gets. šŸ˜‰

And since Mr. Johns doesn’t like having his picture posted, either, I will simply assure you that he’s around! Just stubbornly refusing to let me post his picture. Instead, I’ll post a photo of my favourite Christmas ornament. I love this one–a little tea cup!

Merry Christmas to you and yours, and I wish you every joy of the season. Much love from our home to yours! ā¤

This year’s ornament

Some people have beautifully colour coordinated trees. Other people have thematic trees–like my parents. Their tree is dogs and angels. But mine is a mishmash of memories. It’s how I like it! Every year, I get a new ornament or two. Sometimes, it’s just something pretty, or something I like. One year I got Star Trek ornaments, for example.

But this year, I wanted to get something that would remind us what it was like for the Johns family in 2019. And I found the perfect ornament!

Our son is 11, and this year, he was wild about Monopoly, so he’s been roping my husband and I into playing with him. So Mr. Johns and I have been playing a lot of Monopoly… a lot. There’s something about the age, I think, that leans toward that game, because most of our son’s friends love playing it, too. Our son makes terrible deals, though. Just terrible! And when I told my father that, he said, “You did the same thing! You made awful deals.”

I remember that, too! When I was his age, I’d be playing Monopoly with my family, and if I got Park Place or Boardwalk, my brother could always talk me into some terrible deal, and I’d cave in and trade it away.

“Boardwalk for Baltic, a Get Out of Jail Free card, and $50? Well… I suppose I could do that…”

I wanted to win, of course, but I loved my big brother more and he wanted to win so badly, that I couldn’t resist making him happy.

I think our son is the same way. He plays Monopoly with more heart than shark-instinct, and I love that about him. šŸ™‚ He’s just such a sweet kid!

I’m still looking for an ornament that will cover my husband’s interests this year… so I’m not done shopping quite yet.

Christmas 2019, harlequin author, it's a wonderful life, Kensington author, memento mori

When we think Christmas, we imagine beautiful gifts, soft light, delectable food, happy kids… and it’s easy to get caught up the beauty around us. But this Christmas, a teacher in our community passed away, and my son’s class was hit especially hard. A lot of the kids knew her, even though she taught another grade, and she died so young.

So we had to talk about death with our sixth grader… more than just the death of a pet, but the death of someone in his circles. It just happened… there wasn’t much warning, and life went from being the fun, beautiful drive up to Christmas and suddenly became fragile and precious.

We talked about how we have to be ready to face God–all of us. We don’t know when our time might come, even though we pray to die at a ripe old age. We talked about how being a Christian means we have hope of Heaven, and this isn’t a final goodbye. And Christmas took on a different meaning in our home this year–a little more sober, and a little more grateful for what it means.

I don’t mean to bring you down… I just wanted to share what is happening in the Johns home right now. And I hope you’ll all remember that your presence here on this earth means the world to someone, and without you, more people would be affected than you could ever imagine!

Christmas isn’t always perfect, but when I remember why we celebrate, then Christmas doesn’t have to be perfect for me to feel the elation of the season. Merry Christmas! Let’s celebrate with those we love, and open our hearts to those less fortunate. Because we only pass this way once… and loving each other well seems like the best use of our time possible.

Memento mori and Merry Christmas!

I love our Christmas tree! I’m sure you love yours just as much as I love mine, but it’s covered in ornaments that are filled with memories, and it makes me happy.

I love this time of year–the coziness, the goodwill, the time with family. I look forward to Christmas all year.

I hope all of you are making sweet Christmas memories this month, too. It doesn’t have to be lavish–some cookies, a favourite movie, hot drinks, and some cold weather outside never hurts, either!

But this is our chance–let’s make the most of it!

I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to be too busy to really enjoy these last weeks before Christmas.

In the meantime, have you read my Christmas story in AN AMISH SECOND CHRISTMAS?

It’s on the shelves now!Ā

For the Amish, the day after Christmas is for family, feasting, and exchanging simple gifts. And for three different couples, it will bring another precious chance for love . . .
Ā
THEIR SECOND CHANCE
New York Times and USA Today Bestselling Author Shelley Shepard Gray
Amish nanny Hannah Eicher never thought she’d ever see Rob Prince again. There was no way a relationship between her and the handsome English fireman could overcome her family’s objections—and their personal differences. But when he saves her from a sudden blaze, Hannah longs to see if they can turn holiday hope into a lifetime of happiness . . .
Ā
HIS AMISH ANGEL * Patricia Johns
She’s too outspoken to be a proper Amish wife. So as advice columnist ā€œMiss Amish,ā€ Maggie Lapp helps Amish and English with their romantic problems. But when her tradition-minded former fiancĆ© accidentally reveals her secret, Maggie will need more than a miracle to make things right—and find a perfect love for all the Christmases to come . . .
Ā
AN HEIRLOOM CHRISTMAS * Virginia Wise
Rachel Miller won’t let her disability keep her from selling heirloom plants and proving she can be independent. She certainly doesn’t need reckless Joseph Webber working at her greenhouse to pay off a disastrous Rumspringa stunt. But she and Joseph have more in common than they think—and their surprising holiday partnership might just blossom into forever joy . . .
