Some people have beautifully colour coordinated trees. Other people have thematic trees–like my parents. Their tree is dogs and angels. But mine is a mishmash of memories. It’s how I like it! Every year, I get a new ornament or two. Sometimes, it’s just something pretty, or something I like. One year I got Star Trek ornaments, for example.

But this year, I wanted to get something that would remind us what it was like for the Johns family in 2019. And I found the perfect ornament!

thumbnail_privatevarmobileContainersDataApplication1D285D83-DDA8-4176-8E73-ED193C7ADAFDtmpAE7F3379-8763-47E7-8355-ED4E18503363Image

Our son is 11, and this year, he was wild about Monopoly, so he’s been roping my husband and I into playing with him. So Mr. Johns and I have been playing a lot of Monopoly… a lot. There’s something about the age, I think, that leans toward that game, because most of our son’s friends love playing it, too. Our son makes terrible deals, though. Just terrible! And when I told my father that, he said, “You did the same thing! You made awful deals.”

I remember that, too! When I was his age, I’d be playing Monopoly with my family, and if I got Park Place or Boardwalk, my brother could always talk me into some terrible deal, and I’d cave in and trade it away.

“Boardwalk for Baltic, a Get Out of Jail Free card, and $50? Well… I suppose I could do that…”

I wanted to win, of course, but I loved my big brother more and he wanted to win so badly, that I couldn’t resist making him happy.

I think our son is the same way. He plays Monopoly with more heart than shark-instinct, and I love that about him. 🙂 He’s just such a sweet kid!

I’m still looking for an ornament that will cover my husband’s interests this year… so I’m not done shopping quite yet.

Have you picked up my latest release? I think you’ll like this one! Triplet babies, a brooding cowboy, and a marriage of convenience between best friends… all at Christmas!

A Rancher’s Christmas by Ann Roth

Gina Arnett comes home to Saddlers Prairie to say goodbye to her uncle and sell the family ranch she’s just inherited. Her focus is on getting back to her high-powered career in Chicago. I do love seeing the difference in the covers between the North American version and UK version of the book.

And I’ve gotten a peek at the UK version for HER TRIPLETS’ MISTLETOE DAD! And can I just say that I love it ever more than I love the North American version this time around?

This book is hitting the shelves this October! This is a collection of three novellas written by Yours Truly, Shelley Shephard Gray and Virginia Wise.

“In these touching novellas from a trio of bestselling authors, struggling couples rekindle their love as Christmas approaches…Fans of the authors will relish these sweet tales of reconciliation.”- Publishers Weekly

And the long version of this Publisher’s Weekly review:

“In these touching novellas from a trio of bestselling authors, struggling couples rekindle their love as Christmas approaches. In “Their Second Chance,” Shepard Gray tells the story of Hannah Eicher, an Amish girl who breaks off her relationship with Englisher fireman Rob Prince because of her parents’ objections. But months later, just before Christmas, Rob saves Hannah’s life when her apartment catches fire. Realizing they are still in love, the pair must decide if they can bridge their different worlds. In Johns’s “His Amish Angel,” outspoken Magdalena Lapp has been labeled unmarriageable by her conservative community. After the bishop discovers she is writing an advice column for Englishers, she is ordered to stop. But when she learns that Atley Troyer—her first love and the boy who jilted her—divulged her secret, he breaks her heart again. Ashamed of his actions, Atley realizes he must make amends. In Wise’s “An Heirloom Christmas,” two former schoolmates, the cautious Rachel Miller and reckless Joseph Webber, are forced to work together when Joseph is hired as a caregiver for Rachel’s mother, who has been diagnosed with cancer. The two begin to see past their childhood missteps as they spend the holiday season in close proximity. Fans of the authors will relish these sweet tales of reconciliation.”

I really loved writing HIS AMISH ANGEL, and I think you’ll love it, too. ❤ I hope you’ll pick up a copy this October!

Christmas, harlequin author, Kensington author, lights

Our town is officially all lit up for Christmas. We have this little park in the centre of town–it’s a spray park in the summer for the kids to cool off, and in the winter, they flood the running track and it turns into an outdoor skating rink through the festive trees.

When I took these pictures a few days ago, we’d melted.  But it still looked so pretty!

thumbnail_20181130_183103

We’ve since gotten a nice dump of snow, but I haven’t gotten back to the park after dark, so these are still my best pictures of the lights from this Christmas.

I hope you’re all having a wonderful holiday season! Take good care of each other. ❤

Have you ordered my book yet? You can get it now, or you can wait to find it on the shelves in your favourite bookstore later this month. 🙂

Two stubborn hearts. One ranch.

Could Montana Twins unite them?

With orphaned twin infants to care for, Casey Courtright hoped to buy the ranch he works on—but he can’t match Ember Reed’s offer. Nevertheless, Casey agrees to show Ember the land she plans to use for her therapy center, but only if she’ll help him with the babies. And as the twins draw them together, Casey might just find that Ember is his perfect partner.

Christmas, christmas tree, harlequin author, Kensington author

The Christmas tree is up! And I won’t even apologize for it. I love Christmas, and while I could have waited a little bit longer to put up the decorations, my ten-year-old couldn’t. He was just dying to get the tree up, and since we got some snow, which put me right into a festive mood, too, I caved. (As I always do.)

45351160_1067239823443758_2530252305945591808_n

So I put him to work. I have him a bit of help in the actually putting up of the tree,  but he decorated it.

thumbnail_20181103_200306

He loves Christmas more than I do. He’ll go over the decorations, remembering where they came from. He’ll laugh about things he remembers from when he was little. It’s not just a piece of decoration for him. It’s a piece of our family.

Mr. Johns is less of a Christmas person than I am, but he always brightens up when he gets home from work and finds that Christmas has hit our home. The tree is up, the lighting is soft, the garlands are hanging above the windows, and it just feels… warm.

Of course, we’re in Canada, so our Thanksgiving has already passed in October, so there aren’t any other holidays between us and Christmas. So it might be a little different for you if you live in the US.

But Christmas has come to the Johns home. And it feels good!

We need this!

Christmas, harlequin author, heartwarming author, love inspired author, western romance author

This time of year is dark.

I walk my son to school in the dim pre-sunrise gray, and I walk back home again after dropping him off as red starts to tint the sky in the east. By the time I pick him up again and he’s played outside with his friends for about an hour, the sun is already sinking in the west–day complete.

Living this far north, the days are incredibly short, the night is incredibly long, and winter tends to get incredibly cold. (This winter is the exception on the cold, though…) Going without much daylight can take a real toll on a person’s moods, and Christmas becomes more and more important. It’s a sparkle of light in the darkness.

Candle_light,_pillar_candleWe need this!

I look forward to soft glowing lights, the candles, the ornaments. It would all look rather gawdy if it took place in the middle of summer, but put it into the dead of winter with cold, short days, and it becomes magical. It fills our hearts with wonder and hope, and gives us something to look forward to.

Gifts, cookies, syrupy drinks and sparkling lights–it’s just what the doctor ordered for us light-starved northerners, and I feel a strange kinship to the pagans who celebrated yuletide at the very same time of year by burning their yule logs–light piercing through the darkness.

White_Christmas_Tree_Lights_at_NightI am a Christian–certainly not pagan–but there are some things that are just human. They span religion, time, even continents… There is a reason why people have clung to Christmas. We need this.

Light in darkness. Hope for something better. Love and community. Some dream of a white Christmas, others listen for the sleigh bells on Santa’s sled. I wait for the Christmas lights–the soft glow of tiny lights piercing the darkness.

Because in my heart, I’m thinking of a stable and a manger, when heaven touched earth with the Light of the World.

Merry Christmas, everyone! May your holiday be filled all the beauty of the Christmas season.
