Being under contract is like a weighted blanket–just so cozy! I like knowing what I’ll be writing for the next year. Without a contract, it feels like swinging free–that awful, stomach sinking feeling. Even with my career choice, I like some predictability.

So I was very happy to get lined up with two three book contracts for the next year with Harlequin’s Love Inspired and Heartwarming lines. So that’s a total of six books over the next calendar year. That will keep me busy!

This picture was the least blurry from my self-timer photo shoot. LOL! But it feels great to be back under contract with a publisher I love writing for.

So you can expect more books from me through Harlequin in upcoming months. 🙂

Have you picked up this month’s release?

cowboy-bossAvery Southerly has finally met her biological father…sort of. Instead of properly introducing herself, she took a job as cook at her dad’s ranch in Hope, Montana. There’s just one problem: Avery can’t cook! Luckily ranch manager Hank Granger agrees to help, and things quickly begin heating up in the kitchen.

But romance is not on the menu—Hank could be fired for fraternizing with an employee, and Avery is only in town to get answers. Then she’s headed home to Kansas, where she truly belongs. Hank is determined to help Avery discover the truth about her past. Yet the more time they spend together, all he can see is the future. He just needs to help Avery do the same!

It’s a big day when I actually put pen to contract. There is a lot of work leading up to this point, and the contract is offered a couple of weeks before I ever get the legal document, so by the time I sit down and actually sign, I’ve already done a fair amount of celebrating.

As you may recall, I had two contracts offered to me on the same day, but the first contract arrived a couple of days earlier, and when I signed it, I was wearing long johns and no makeup, so not exactly a photo op.

When this contract arrived, I made sure to put on a bit of makeup… and you can’t see the long johns. (Its winter. This is Canada. It’s how I roll.)

The contracts are now signed and sent back to the legal department, which leaves me with the hard work of delivering five full manuscripts over the next calendar year.

This is the fun part!

As you know, A SECOND CHANCE AT FOREVER was accepted for publication by Love Inspired Harlequin. This is really exciting for me. Seriously, contracts never get old!

So here I am on the auspicious day… a picture taken by my six-year-old who asked, “How come you’re putting on makeup?” as if it were the rarest thing he’s seen in his young life. It might be, and it was only lip gloss.

And this is the main event:

The contract is signed with my trusty old Bic pen, and I’m locked into a delightful agreement where I will finish writing the book within six weeks and deliver it to my editor.

The above goofy look on my face? That’s what Happy Author looks like!

PS. My son wanted me to include his photography skills, taking pictures of his Koala Brothers plane set. So here is his contribution of the day, besides taking a picture of his mom. 🙂

I’m not very good at celebrating…

celebrating, celebration, contract signing

I’m quite terrible at it, actually. In celebration of this contract, I couldn’t think of anything to do! Writers who live in their heads have a hard time with actually doing things. We’d rather sit back and watch, then write about it. It’s the flip side of being a novelist. We’re much cooler in our own heads. I’m not joking–the mild mannered writer you see before you is much different than the woman who vaults through my mental space.

I’ve signed about a dozen contracts so far, so putting my Jane Hancock down isn’t anything brand new, but Harlequin has been my goal for years now, so this contract ought to be celebrated.

A friend came over the day after I signed and mailed it off. We had popcorn and watched our kids play. As a mom, celebrating is just so much less glitzy than before a child!

But that didn’t seem quite enough. So I made chicken wings. I love chicken wings! It’s the kind of understated novelist celebration that happens around here. A deep sigh of content and a pan of chicken wings… cut off the bone for the four year old across from me.

Homemade and delicious!
