This summer, I had one goal: edit and submit a novel called SMOOTH AS CHOCOLATE.

That probably doesn’t sound like a huge accomplishment given the amount of time I had–a whole summer! But it really was. Granted, when I’m alone, I can get that amount of work done in 2 weeks, but when I’m parenting at the same time with my 6 year old son off of school, it gets a lot harder!

I love spending time with my son, and who doesn’t enjoy summer fun with the kids? But kids demand a lot out of you, and the minute they sense you sitting down or focusing on something other than them, they have a list of requests:

Mathers“Can I have a snack?”

“Can I play Wii?”

“Do you know what I dreamed last night?”

“Is Grandma going to die because she’s old?”

“Will we hear things in Heaven?”

“Do you want to hear a joke?” (Warning: his jokes are long, convoluted and start with a chicken and a road…)

All of my writing needs to happen before about 4 pm, because that is when I end up mentally crashing (having bounced out bed at 6). If I haven’t gotten any work done by then, I can just give up because when I finally get some time to myself around 8 pm, my brain refuses to cooperate and I just stare at the page feeling cranky.

So when I tell you that I’ve submitted SMOOTH AS CHOCOLATE to the Harlequin’s Heartwarming line, it’s a big deal. A big, celebratory deal! ๐Ÿ˜€

Someone suggested I celebrate with chocolate. There is a certain little boy in this home who would agree wholeheartedly!

I’m not normally a loosey goosey plotter, but I seem to be for the book I’m currently writing. This time, I plotted out the main plot kernels for each chapter, but I didn’t really flesh things out. It’s pretty bare bones on that outline!

When I’m throwing together my plot, if I leave a spot a little bare, I tell myself, “It’s okay, I’ll sort it out when I get to it.” Well, I just got to one of those places, and I have to tell you–it’s annoying! I’ve got a scene all prepped and ready to roll, but I’m not entirely sure what Important Thing is going to be discovered in this scene. I can’t just toss my characters together for no good reason. This isn’t a Friends episode. This is a novel. There have to be reasons that run deeper than the character’s whims. There has to be importance on the author level, too. Get out of that silly fountain unless it’s going to further the plot, people!

So here I sit, tired from a busy day of momming and wifing, and I’m staring at this scene thinking… “Now what?”

I’ll go to bed tonight without having written a word today. I’ll lay in bed, staring at the dark ceiling, and my husband will say,

“What are you doing?”

I’ll say, “Thinking. I don’t know what’s going to happen at the dinner.”

He’ll say, “What dinner?”

I’ll say, “In my book. I have this dinner, and I’ve been building up to it, and something has to happen. Like of importance. It can’t just be nom nom and candlelight.”

He’ll say, “Okay… so tell me what’s going on so far…”

And that, dear reader, is why I love this man. He’ll lay in bed with me while I expound upon the plot and various motives of my characters. He’ll stare at a dark ceiling with me. He’ll help me sort out my plot holes.

And then… after all of that unromantic business of book plotting, while we’re still laying in the dark and he can’t see me at all… he’ll tell me I’m pretty.

I used to be smarter…

Mothers compartmentalize. It’s what we do. It’s how we waggle a warning finger at a misbehaving child, talk on the phone and unload the dishwasher at the same time. It can be hard to think straight when you’re doing so much at once, and I swear, I was smarter before childbirth.

I was! I had deep thoughts. I thought about women’s rights, morality, culture, the ways novel-writing styles have changed over the last hundred years… Thoughts. I swear. I had them. And they weren’t interrupted by, “Young man, get off of that!”

Now, as a wife, mother and novelist, I do have deep thoughts, but they take me by surprise. I don’t see them coming when I’m in the mom-box. There I can be in mid-lecture about manners at the breakfast table, and I’ll shove back whatever brain wave was coming at me, because lectures must not be interrupted. As a mother, what else do I have in my arsenal, if not a lengthy lecture?

Then, when the lecture is complete, feet have been removed from the table top and order once more reigns, I realize that there had been a thought in there–an idea, a realization about something, and I’ll know exactly what I need.

Quiet.

Just a little bit of quiet, all to myself, to hear myself think again. Because beyond the mom-box, there is still a woman with thoughts and ideas, and while my life experience might have changed, molded and developed some of those ideas into much different shapes than they ever were when I was 22 or 25, those thoughts are still there.

That’s when I say, “Tell you what, kiddo. Mommy needs some quiet time to herself, and you watch a little TV, okay?”

TV–his sorta-rare luxury, and my guilty short cut.

And I pull out my computer and open up my manuscript to that beautiful blank page.

Time to write.

The S-word

Fall has arrived in our neck of the woods. Chilly wind, blazing trees, sweaters, my little faux fireplace… My favorite time of year!

With my son in school, I now walk him to school and back, which forces me outside. That’s not a bad thing. Exercise is positive, but I do miss the good old days when I could count on staying inside for a solid week and letting it do what it wanted outside.

Snow? Not a problem! I could make the groceries last. ๐Ÿ™‚

I shouldn’t mention snow. In Alberta, Canada, we normally get our first snow in October (even if it doesn’t stick around), so I could be blamed for it. There is an unwritten rule around here–the one who says the S-word shoulders full responsibility for the next snowfall.

So I take it back. I didn’t say it.

Let’s just stick with those falling leaves and the drizzly days. Weather perfection!
