A Precious Christmas Gift, amish romance, dollhouse chess, harlequin, love inspired, miniature chess, sweet romance

As you might know by now, I absolutely adore dollhouse miniatures, and the newest addition to my little collection is a complete set of 1:12 chess. It’s so cute!

It has all the pieces, and the stand is metal, and it has a magnetized surface so that the pieces stick to it, which is a huge relief, because you don’t want to lose a piece that small! It would be next to impossible to find again, and I would probably cry.

My son and I tried a game of tweezer chess, and it IS a playable board!

It’s the perfect addition to my little book nook reading room I have set up, and I couldn’t love it more!

These are the teeny tiny things that make me ever so happy! I am endlessly entertained with miniatures, when I’m not writing books, that is. 😉

I do hope you’ll pick up a copy of my newest release that’s still on the shelves! A Precious Christmas Gift won’t be on the shelves for much longer, so pick it up now, while you can! It’s an emotional Christmas read about a mother’s love. ❤

And after this… I suppose you’ll just have to grab a copy online! 🙂

Cabbage rolls are the kind of food that doesn’t have an official recipe. And I’ll stand by that! Every family has their own version of cabbage rolls, because every family likes something a little bit different.

For example, my cabbage rolls are vegetarian. (Gasp!) My Russian Mennonite ancestors just rolled over in their graves. 😉 But my parents raised me vegetarian, so my dad made his without meat. And they were delicious! Mine are like his, but different because I have allergies now that I didn’t have before. So we tweak them for our family’s taste.

It all starts with boiled a head of cabbage.

You boil until the leaves come off the cabbage head, and aren’t too soft, because you need to use the leaves to wrap up your filling.

The filling is a mix of things you like! Some people do ground beef with rice and spices, and a very few others, like me, do a vegetarian mix.

My filling uses:

  • rice
  • spinach
  • blended chick peas
  • garlic
  • diced onion
  • salt
  • oil
  • paprika
  • lemon juice (just as dash)

Then you wrap a large spoonful of filling in a boiled cabbage leaf, and put it in a pan. You put tomato sauce on top, and bake the life out of it for about 1.5 hours. I also add a layer of cabbage leaves on top, just to make sure that the actual cabbage rolls stay moist and don’t burn.

And there you go!

Cabbage rolls!

My family loves them, and since we can’t have my parents over to eat because of Covid, I made these so that I could bring them some cabbage rolls, too. They are a lot of work, so they’re a treat.

So, for those of you who have cabbage rolls in their family repertoire, what do you use in your filling? Cabbage roll filling tells so much about a family! 🙂

Quarantine life

Quarantine life isn’t too much different from regular life for me. The main difference is that our son is homeschooling with the rest of North America right now, so he’s at home. This slows down my writing. I’m someone who likes to work in dead silence and absolute solitude. But I’ll survive. 😉

Mr. Johns is still working since his job is a necessary service, so he still heads out to work every day. And I’m still writing, as usual.

Pichu is the big winner right now, because he MUCH prefers our son over us, and so he has his favourite person in the whole world with him every single day, and the two of them play together endlessly.

This is Pichu playing with a pencil, upside down in my son’s hand. It’s very cute! If I tried that with him, I’d lose a finger. That is a very strong beak. 😉

pichu 1

Sometimes, Mr. Johns has to work late, and when that happens, it turns into a dinner free-for-all over here. This particular dinner, Mr. Johns was working late, my son was eating in front of the TV (please don’t judge!) and I was eating and going over a book manuscript at the table.

Deadlines loom, after all! 😉

And this is what life looks like in the Johns home right now.

If you’re looking for a good book to read during all this staying in, I’ve got the book for you! It has a forty-ish heroine trying to recover from a nasty divorce, a seventeen-year-old stepdaughter who knows every single nerve to pluck, and a hero our heroine knows better than to fall for… It’s bursting with family drama, intense kisses and has a dinner club of women who’ve gone through it all before, and believe wholeheartedly in second chances.

I think you’ll love it!

This book is about hope, it’s about finding the good things in something that is hard, it’s about learning that family is more then just blood relations. Patricia Johns knows how to tug at them old heart strings, she once again takes you on a journey that will show you that the world is good.

~Goodreads, 5 star review

Mountain 1

I love writing a more mature heroine. Don’t get me wrong–young heroines are fun, too, but when I write a woman in her forties, I can dig deeper.

There comes an age for every woman  when she stops taking the BS, and she draws a line. For a lot of women, that’s 40. She’s tired of the disrespect, and not willing to play games anymore for anyone.

She’s also experienced a few different types of relationships–good ones, manipulative ones, short-lived ones. She knows what her heart can take, and what is just a waste of time. So sweeping a woman in her forties off her feet… it takes more than some sweet talking.

In THEIR MOUNTAIN REUNION, Melanie Isaacs just wants some time to lick her wounds after a painful divorce, but when her ex-husband’s teenaged daughter lands on her doorstep, that isn’t going to be possible.

What is it about kids that forces us to face the stuff we’d rather not look at? Melanie needs to start over, but not just for herself. She’s got a seventeen-year-old watching how she copes with this rejection, and Tilly has a few painful life lessons of her own.

I hope you’ll pick up a copy of THEIR MOUNTAIN REUNION and join Melanie in discovering the Second Chance Dinner Club. These are women who have seen it all before, and are still wading through their troubles. But they believe in second chances, and in women supporting each other.

Turns out, that’s the combination that works!

Sarah Yoder has always dreamed of having a family of her own. But with no eligible prospects, she’s beginning to worry—until the Raber brothers return to Cedar Grove. Sarah and Isaac Raber walked out together the summer they were sixteen, so perhaps he’s the one. If only she had a little help catching his eye…

Levi Raber has no interest in marriage. When his mother reveals her plans to deed the family farm to the first son who marries, Levi has a plan to ensure that it isn’t him: a pretend courtship with Sarah to nudge his competitive brother in her direction. Then Levi can leave town to train racehorses—just as he wanted. So why does Sarah—with her vision of a peaceful, happy life on the land—make his heart gallop? Perhaps the answer lies in the promise of how sweetly surprising love can be.

I got yet another box of books, and I’m so happy to finally have these books, because this one releases in a matter of weeks! That’s right–May, this one hits the virtual shelves, and I think you’re going to love it!

Mountain 3

Their Mountain Reunion is a story about love after heartbreak and second chances when your teenaged step-daughter thinks you’re too old for it. 😉

Melanie Isaacs raised her ex’s kids, and now she’s divorced and out of the family circle. Obviously. Except her stepdaughter Tilly has arrived at the lake house that Melanie got in  the divorce and she’s refusing to leave.

Add to that, Melanie’s ex from way back in the day is in town searching for his biological father he lost touch with, and Melanie is inclined to help him. It sure beats dealing with a seventeen-year-old’s eye rolls and attitude.

Logan has grown up, and he’s got a young adult son and some recent heartbreak of his own. When they were teenagers, the chemistry seemed like enough, but they’re both a little wiser now. And a little more world weary, too.

But when Melanie attends a mysterious dinner club at the upscale Mountain Springs Lodge, second chances start feeling possible again…

This is the first book in THE SECOND CHANCE CLUB miniseries!
