afrikaans translations, foreign translations, harlequin author, mills and boon author

I didn’t realize that some of my books have been translated into Afrikaans. But it’s true!

THE COWBOY’S CITY GIRL is called Die Beesboer Se Stadsnooi in Afrikaans, and here is the cover:51fBxAAwkWL

From what I can tell, this one is only available as an e-book.

I also stumbled across SAFE IN THE LAWMAN’S ARMS, which in Afrikaans is called, Veilig in die polisiebeampte se arms.

And this one is available in print still! I’ve asked my editor at Harlequin to get me a copy of Veilig in die Polisiebeampte se Arms, and they are getting in touch with their third party licencee in South Africa to get me a copy.  I can’t WAIT to have it in my own little hands. When I receive it, I’ll be sure to post.

Beauty that is earned

My grandmother died in her fifties, so I never did see what she’d look like as an old woman. My mother is sixty this year (yes, she had me young!), so she isn’t exactly elderly yet, either. And I am the spitting image of both my mother and grandmother. Those were some strong genes… But I have no idea what these genes look like in their 70’s or 80’s. I don’t know why this has become such a preoccupation with me, but it has. I wish I knew!

As a result, I’m intrigued by how people age. Take Helen Mirren, for example:

1-64459_image

helen-mirren

Helen Mirren is more beautiful today (in my opinion) than she was in her youth.

Take Judi Dench:

She’s the same.

Youth IS beautiful–it always has been. But there is a different kind of beauty that shines from deeper down in more mature women that makes me stop and think I want that. It’s the kind of beauty that is earned. It’s not about features or makeup so much as it’s about who she is, who she’s chosen to be over the years. Its accumulates, and then shines through the eyes.

My mom has that kind of beauty. It starts deeper down, and the older she gets, the more visible it is. She’s worked hard, loved hard. She’s achieved, too! But life has softened and deepened her in a way that only time can do. You can see the difference in our eyes, can’t you?

My mom and I

My mom and I

Maybe it’s Maybelline? Maybe not! Maybe it’s decades of experience, perseverance and passion! Maybe it’s a life of loving well. And a little face cream, my mother would argue. You can never go wrong with a little moisturizer. 😉 She’s practical that way.

Being a mom is a balance between comfort and kindness and lighting a fire under small bottoms. I don’t get to be the good guy too often. If there is discipline to be handed out, it’s probably going to come from Mom. (Dad’s the fun one.)

Kids are notorious for putting out the unvarnished truth in their artwork. So when my son drew this picture, I was wildly relieved that THIS is how he sees me!

I’m making popcorn on the stove, he’s informed me, and apparently singing merrily in the process. I DO make a lot of popcorn. Everyone loves popcorn, and it’s our go-to snack. I loved this picture because this is how popcorn-making Mom looks to him. Maybe not to anyone else. But to him.

Luckily he didn’t draw lecture-giving Mom. She’s bound to be significantly less lithe and joyful. 😉

Sometimes we just have to see ourselves through the eyes of the people who love us.

A cop doing it right

We have so many stories online lately of cops doing it wrong… (and I don’t defend bigots with a badge!) But not all cops are like that, and this is an example of a cop who is doing it very, very right.

161004100021-iyw-officer-child-bad-day-trnd-exlarge-169

Sgt. Precious Cornner-Jones saw this little boy fling himself to the ground at a rally. His mom said that was his way of expressing himself lately, and Sgt. Cornner-Jones sympathized with the little guy. So she got onto his level and they had a chat.

It didn’t take long, and the little guy got back up and felt much better. But that moment with a compassionate police officer resonated so much that the picture when viral.

In Sgt. Cornner-Jones’s words: “As an adult sometimes all we want is one person to stop, get on our level and maybe wipe our tears. These children are entitled to bad days just as us, so give them that moment to bring it together. Get on someone’s level today and make them smile!! Spread PEACE and LOVE you might be that person that gives them hope!”

a non-writing writer, a writer is a writer because even when there is no hope, harlequin author, heartwarming author, love inspired author, mills and boon author, monster courting insanity, western romance author, you keep writing anyway

Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve been a writer. I obviously don’t mean professionally–I mean on a heart level. My mother tells me stories about when I was about ten or eleven and I’d get so incredibly cranky that she’d send me up to my room to write something. When I reemerged, I’d be cheerful again and I’d have a new story written.

I’ve always been that way. If I don’t have something to work on, I’m a wreck. In fact, when I take a week off of my writing schedule, I’ll find myself feeling insecure for no logical reason, socially awkward, moody… then I figure that I should probably get back to work and all those unpleasant feelings melt away and I’m back to my normal self again.

Luckily, I’m now writing for three different Harlequin lines, so I’m no longer left without a writing project in front of me. And I don’t use the word “Luckily” lightly. I may have worked my tail off for this, but I know there are talented writers out there who have worked just as hard who haven’t had the same breaks. So I appreciate this–treasure it, even. And I never take it for granted.

Because even if I weren’t this ridiculously lucky… even if I didn’t have editors willing to work with me and an amazing publisher wanting to sell my stories, I’d still be doing this–sitting in front of my computer, hammering out stories and sending them off to magazines, publishing houses, competitions. Anything. Because when I don’t write, I’m a wreck. This is who I am. And before there was a publisher willing to look at my work, I was there, in front of my computer, clacking away on the stories that filled my head.

A BAXTER’S REDEMPTION is coming out January 2017, and I just got my finalized cover with which to tantalize you! 😉

baxters-redemption

Isabel Baxter returns to her home town after a disfiguring accident that leaves her badly scarred. When she left, she was a beauty queen and heir to a fortune. When she returns, even her inheritance is in jeopardy. Her father has remarried a woman two years younger than his daughter who is newly pregnant, and his new wife wants the money for herself. When Isabel’s father signs over her trust fund, she has just enough money to open her own chocolate shop–something she’s wanted to do for years now. Her father thinks the idea is ridiculous and does the one thing left in his power–sends in the family lawyer to keep an eye on her and make sure that she doesn’t squander what may very well be the last money she ever sees from her father…

Enter our hero, the lawyer.

You’ll be able to buy this book online through Harlequin, Amazon, and any other e-retailer starting January 2017.

back to school, books about babies, harlequin author, heartwarming author, love inspired author, mills and boon author, school aged parenting, western romance author

Who doesn’t love a baby? I write them into stories all the time–snuggly newborns with swirls of baby curls and earnest dedication to draining bottles. I love to write about babies, with their squirms and their yawns… even their cries and their diapers. But I have to confess, I’m past the baby stage in my personal life.

800px-danderyd_hospital_newborn_baby

At 37, there are still plenty of women my age having babies, but I’m not in their ranks. I have a school-aged son, and I’m very happy with life on this side of parenting. And here is why:

  • I don’t get woken up at night anymore. And sleep is a beautiful thing!
  • Interesting conversations with my 8-year-old. He notices the world around him, thinks about ethical issues and is generally an interesting little person.
  • Tantrums are a thing of the past.
  • Diapers are a thing of the past.
  • 6 hours a day all to myself to focus on my own career while he’s in school.
  • Grocery shopping no longer requires a lot of preparation and anxiety.

I could go on and on, but you get the idea. When your kid(s) enter into the school stage of things, you have a whole new level of freedom that you forgot even existed, and I love it.

So when I hear that someone is expecting a baby, I feel truly happy for them–they are in for an amazing adventure filled with love and exhaustion. But when I hear that someone’s child is about to start school, that’s where I start to get excited on their behalf. There is just as much  love, but  now there’s some freedom, too!

I feel like there should be greeting cards for these occasions: Congratulations on sending your last child to school! You have no idea how awesome this is going to be!

1328101886_hourglassMaybe even a Going to School shower where the mother gets traditional gifts that are for her exclusively: a journal to write in, a pile of books to read, scented candles, and maybe even a commemorative hour glass to count the hours until school is over again. It’s important to celebrate the milestones, don’t you think?

We need to make this a thing, ladies. I think I might be onto something! 🙂
