When your mother has an English Lit degree…

I have both an English Lit degree and a 10-year-old boy. He loves reading books, but never the books that I suggest he read. He likes zombies and fart jokes and bad guys and the diaries of Wimpy Kids. I suppose that should make perfect sense–he’s 10, after all! But since he’s still young enough that I can sit on him and read to him, I decided to take advantage of the time we’ve got before he’s yet older and refuses to be sat on and read to. 😉

So I got onto Amazon and bought a book called Classics to Read Aloud to Your Children.

We’ve only gotten about a quarter of the way through the book, but so far, we’re both having a lot of fun! We’ve covered some Aesop’s fables, a Tom Sawyer excerpt, a little bit of Homer, and are moving on to Shakespeare.

Now, it’s entirely possible that this whole exercise will be forgotten two weeks from now… and maybe not! Maybe he’ll remember some of these stories. Maybe they’ll sink in and inspire his own little stories he loves to write. Maybe this will fuel a lifelong love of stories, just like his mom. And maybe the one having a thoroughly wonderful time, the one to treasure all of this, is me.

Because I am enjoying myself. I’ve always loved the classics, and sharing them with my son is just such fun! I do hope this is good for him in the long haul, even if it was because he had time with his mom as I read stories to him every night.

This is what happens when your mother has a degree in English and feels wistful.

She’ll read to you. 😉
